Architecture

The School of Architecture is located in the city of Cambridge, about 30 minutes south of the main Waterloo campus. The location provides wonderful spaces for design studios, labs, and classrooms. It also includes a superb design library and exhibition galleries.

Chemical Engineering

Civil Engineering

Computer Engineering
Computer engineering draws upon Waterloo's strengths in electrical engineering and computer science. You'll gain experience with all aspects of computers, from chips and wiring through to software, networks, and communications.

Environmental Engineering
In Canada's largest Environmental Engineering program, you'll focus on issues such as water management and treatment, remediation of surface water and groundwater, biotechnology, and how pollutants travel in water and how to remove them.
You'll take courses from other departments in Engineering and from the faculties of Environment and Science to learn to address environmental issues from various points of view.

Geological Engineering
If you are adventurous and enjoy the outdoors - this program is perfect! Waterloo is known for hands-on learning, and as a Geological Engineering student, you'll get your hands dirty through field courses and co-op jobs. These practical opportunities allow you to see geological processes first hand.
With just 15 to 20 students in first year, you'll be able work closely with classmates and your professors. Through co-op, you'll gain 2 years of paid work experience, earn money to help pay for your education, and try out different career areas.
This Geological Engineering program is one of only 2 in Ontario. Offered jointly by the Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences departments, the program develops your engineering design and problem-solving skills, and gives you a solid background in earth sciences.

Management Engineering
Management Engineering was created in response to the need for graduates who are trained in management and in engineering. You'll study the core subjects of an engineering degree while gaining the skills required to work with diverse groups of people.

Mechatronics Engineering
Mechatronics engineering combines mechanical engineering, electronics, control engineering, and computer science to design systems such as those listed above.
Waterloo's is the first undergraduate Mechatronics program in Canada. You'll find an emphasis on teamwork and practical applications throughout the program and especially in your design project courses.

Nanotechnology Engineering
Nanotechnology Engineering applies ideas from chemistry, quantum physics, biology, and electronics to build objects through manipulations at the atomic or molecular level.
As a nanotechnology engineer, you'll build structures ranging from one to one hundred nanometers (billionths of a metre). You'll use mathematics, science, and engineering to model, design, and make structures for sensors, electronics, biosystems, or advanced materials.
After you graduate, you'll be able to apply your knowledge to create advanced materials that can be used in new ways. For example, you could reduce the weight of materials to increase efficiency, find new ways to test for environmental pollutants, or work in the medical field using miniature devices that can act at the molecular level.
Waterloo is the only university in Canada to offer a full degree in Nanotechnology Engineering. The University's new $160-million Quantum-Nano Centre houses specialized labs for you to get hands-on, practical experience.

Software Engineering
Software engineering is a systematic and disciplined approach to developing software. Your courses will not only include a solid foundation in math, engineering, and computer science, but will also cover the software development process, project management, and technical documentation.
Waterloo's co-op program gives you an edge in the software industry after graduation. You'll graduate with 2 years of paid co-op work experience and earn money to finance your education. Most Software Engineering students work at leading software design firms even before they graduate.
The program, which combines Waterloo's internationally-recognized strengths in Computer Science and Computer Engineering, is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board and the Computer Science Accreditation Council, giving you access to careers in both areas.

Systems Design Engineering
Are you interested in a broad range of areas that don't fit into a traditional area of engineering? Then consider Systems Design Engineering, our most flexible Engineering program.
You'll learn to apply engineering principles to wherever humans interact with technology - environmental systems, robotics, and computer and interface design. The methods and approaches you'll learn are applicable to the design of almost any product, tool, task or system.
The "Systems" in the name reflects the fact that we take a "big picture" approach to problem solving. You'll learn to look at a system as a whole before attempting to solve the problem. See how one change will affect another element of the system.
Explore and apply design principles in the Systems Design Workshop, get involved with projects such as the Midnight Sun solar car, and work on design projects of your own choosing in your upper years. To complement your required Engineering courses, you can choose from 200 elective courses.
Try out different career areas and graduate with 2 years of work experience through co-op work terms. You'll alternate 4-month school terms with paid co-op work terms and earn money to help pay for your education.

Engineering Programs at University of Windsor
Windsor’s unique climate of co-operation between academic, business and industry sectors gives you access to state-of-the-art engineering facilities and outstanding career opportunities.
The Faculty of Engineering offers programs designed to develop professional competence and to prepare students to solve the technical problems of society and the global environment.
The Centre for Engineering Innovation will house the University of Windsor's Faculty of Engineering, with an impact that will reverberate off campus.
The 300,000-sq. ft. facility, slated for the southwest corner of Wyandotte Street and California Avenue at a cost estimated at $112 million, will focus on research and development and will include an Industrial Courtyard that will team the University, business and other partners in an environment to facilitate a direct connection between education, research, and industrial innovation.
"This is a major step for the University of Windsor and for the Windsor-Essex region," says UWindsor President Alan Wildeman. "The Centre for Engineering Innovation will provide our students with an extraordinary facility within which to learn and to see engineering in action. It will provide laboratories and research facilities where emerging priorities such as environmental sustainability, alternative energy, nanostructure, lighter materials, and more efficient manufacturing systems can be addressed."
The CEI will be the largest Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building in the region. LEED is a nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.
Designed by B+H Architects, the CEI will be constructed of recycled materials where possible, and will incorporate a green roof, water recycling, low-energy heating and other sustainability systems. It will be a living building, where students can learn from the electrical, mechanical, civil and environmental engineering systems displayed throughout the structure.
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Department offers separate degrees in:
• Civil Engineering, and
• Environmental Engineering
The starting degree is the Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) degree. These degrees are reviewed by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). Bachelor's degrees are termed undergraduate degrees, and are normally entered directly from high school, and are designed to take four years to complete.
After the B.A.Sc., those wishing to further their education may apply to enrol in our Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) which is course-work based. The Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) degree requires course work and a thesis (major research project). Students who do well in the Master of Applied Science degree (M.A.Sc.) may apply to enrol in studies leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. Master and Doctoral degrees are considered graduate degrees.

Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Electrical Engineering Department employs 18 full-time faculty members, 2 technologists and 2 secretaries. The Department handles 35 undergraduate courses. Non-teaching members include 3 cross-appointments, 5 adjuncts, 5 Emeriti professors, 7 post doctoral fellows, 2 visiting professors and 2 visiting scholars. The Department manages, on average, 90 research topics every year and handles a number of industrial projects. The majority of our undergraduate courses include physical laboratory sections for hands on experience.
Research interests in the Department covers many fields which include wireless and digital communication, control including automotive control, power systems, smart grid, electric and hybrid vehicles, sensor technology, network and computer security, computer arithmetic, electronic as well as electromechanical chip design, software and hardware design, biomedical image processing and machine vision and also will be adding the areas of bionics and magnetic induction as part of research interests.
At the undergraduate level the Department offers an accredited BASc. (Bachelor of Applied Science) degree. The Department also offers an Honours Certificate Program (HCP) as an optional fifth year for students, with a Bachelor's degree, to upgrade their knowledge in a new field of Electrical Engineering or to be able to prepare for admission to the M.Eng. program.

Industrial Engineering
What is “Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering”? Industrial Engineers (IE) help all types of enterprises to figure out how to do things better, whether it’s shortening wait lines at an amusement park, distribution of products or manufacturing automobiles, Industrial Engineers save companies money and increase efficiency.
The processes and systems that improve quality and productivity also work to eliminate the waste of time, money, materials and other commodities which are created by Industrial Engineers. IE offers the best of both engineering and business. Many Industrial Engineers are employed in areas such as entertainment, shipping and logistics and health care organizations.

Mechanical, Automotive & Materials Engineering
The mechanical engineering program at Windsor builds on the common first-year courses in mathematics, science, and basic engineering; it focuses on two major components: solid mechanics and thermofluids. The field of solid mechanics includes the design and motion of machines, the analysis of forces and stresses, and the area of NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness). Thermofluids is a broad area that encompasses fluid flow in pipes and wind turbines, heat transfer in components such as radiators and computer chips, and the thermodynamics of engines and power systems. As a mechanical engineering student, you will learn to master the fundamentals for designing, analyzing, and operating mechanical, thermal, and fluid systems.
In addition to the general Mechanical Engineering program, you can also choose one of four Mechanical Engineering option streams.
1) Mechanical Engineering with an Aerospace Option;
2) Mechanical Engineering with an Automotive Engineering Option;
3) Mechanical Engineering with an Environmental Engineering Option;
4) Mechanical Engineering with a Materials Option.
Mechanical Engineering with an Aerospace Option
The Aerospace Engineering program at Windsor will be an optional stream within existing Mechanical Engineering undergraduate program. The program will build upon the success of our existing offerings by continuing practice of emphasizing physical lab experiences for students and it will incorporate the latest innovations in teaching and laboratory experiences. As the program progresses connections to Electrical and Computer and Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering programs will be formed to ensure that graduates learn about avionics (aircraft electrical systems and instrumentation) as well as the planning and operation of complex manufacturing and logistical operations.
In addition, students will be strongly encouraged to take advantage of the existing Minor in Business which is offered by the Odette School of Business Administration to enable graduates to learn about the financing and marketing aspects of large business sectors.
Mechanical Engineering with an Automotive Engineering Option
The objectives of the Option include:
• to give students an understanding of the automotive industry and Canada's place in it;
• to give students an understanding of the major technological issues in the industry from the pointof view of materials, manufacturing, design, ergonomics as well as business;
• to give students the skills which will enable them to contribute to their employers more rapidly and thus gain an advantage over graduates from other universities;
• to furth assist the development of the automotive industry in Canada and particularly in Windsor-Essx by provideing better educated engineers;
Students will receive the degree designation "Bachelor of Applied Science Honours Mechanical Engineering (Automotive Engineering Option)', or the designation "Bachelor of Applied Science Honours Mechanical Engineering (Automotive Engineering Option) - Co-op".
Mechanical Engineering with an Environmental Engineering Option
An Environmental Engineering Option within the BASc program in Mechanical Engineering will prepare grduates to address environmental needs of industry, consistent with a firm foundation inthe principles and practice of mechanical engineeirng. Further, it provides our students greater choice in focusing their academic program.
Mechanical Engineering with a Materials Option
Learning Outcomes
Gradates of the program have developed the skills in the following areas:
• Select materials based on design requirements such as strength and formability;
• Relate mechanical properties, such as strength and ductility, to the structure of the material and how it was processed;
• Investigate the causes for failure of material components;
• Analyze the effects of materials processes such as heat treatment by applying thermodynamic and kinetics fundamentals;
• Utilize materials analysis techniques such as grain size determination, microhardness testing, and metallography.
A particular advantage of the Automotive Engineering Option is the central location of Windsor in the heart of North America’s automotive manufacturing region. The mechanical and environmental programs have teamed together to offer an option that addresses aspects of both pollution control and sustainable design; Windsor’s program in environmental engineering was the first in Canada. Windsor has one of the largest materials programs in Canada; its undergraduate option prepares students for work in industry and well as for further study at the graduate level.
One-quarter of the students in Mechanical Engineering are in the Cooperative Education program, which augments university study with real-world practical experience in industry. Students in the Cooperative Education program enjoy a wealth of job opportunities given Windsor’s location in Ontario’s manufacturing region.
Of particular note is Windsor’s unique cooperative education exchange program with Schaeffler Technologies development and manufacturing facilities in the cities of Herzogenaurach and Schweinfurt in the Bavaria region of Germany. Each year, over ten percent of mechanical engineering students travel to Germany for a full-year work term, generally after their third year of study. Schaeffler provides on-the-job German language training for its international cooperative education students. Upon return from their year of work in Germany, Windsor students have regularly received placement into the university’s third-year Advanced German language courses.
A unique Master’s degree program focused in the automotive area has been developed in cooperation with the North American automotive manufacturer Chrysler and its Italian partner Fiat. If you decide to pursue this program after completing your undergraduate degree, you will begin with one year of graduate study in Windsor on a project supported by Chrysler. You will then travel to Politecnico di Torino, a premier technological university in Italy, where you will complete your Master’s degree with one year of study on a project supported by Fiat. The entire program is conducted in English, and students graduate with a joint degree from both institutions.
As you can see, the program in Mechanical Engineering offers a wide range of opportunities and experiences. The professors and staff of the department invite you to learn more about this exciting field of engineering.

Admission Requirements
- If you are in your last year of high school, try to obtain your official mid-term results or "predicted grades" from your school. If you are in university, provide your latest final grades, and a list of all courses in which you are presently registered. Any syllabus/course description available will assist the University in assessing your transcript for potential transfer credit/advanced standing. The syllabus should be the official English translations.
- Proof of English language proficiency.
Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English to be considered for admission. This can be demonstrated in the following ways:
1) A minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
2) A minimum score of 60 on the Carleton University’s Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL); or
3) Successful completion of the University of Windsor's English Language Improvement Program (ELIP) (level III) with a minimum final grade of 75%; or
4) A minimum score of 85 on the English Proficiency Test administered by the English Language Institute of the University of Michigan (MELAB); or
5) A minimum score of 220 with a T.W.E. 4.5 on the Computer-based Test, 83 with an essay score of 20 on the Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (T.O.E.F.L.).
